In early/mid September of 2020 I find myself reading a story on Sid Moore's site, China National Aviation - The Hump Pilots, about a young man from Hawaii who was killed in China flying a plane owned by Moon Chin. And so, begins the following story...first I contacted Colin Sato, Walter's nephew, who lives in Hawaii and who produced the video below and his mother, Walter's sister, Salome Shin Sato, now living in Medford and Grants Pass, Oregon. With Greg Crouch's help we have sent inscribed copies of Greg's book,"China's Wings" to Salome and Colin. Colin has provided the only photos the family has of Walter while he was in China. If anyone reading this story can provide more information or photos, please contact me at: pepperbud@pobox.com or my cell: 760-808-5027 or Landline: 760-832-8213 Some history of Walter, produced by his nephew, Colin Sato, and narrated by his sister, Salome (Shin) Sato Walter in 1942 Oahu - even thou the writing says 1946 it was about 1942 This pic of Walter on his surfboard was taken at the Waikiki Natatorium in Honolulu - the only salt-water pool in existence at that time.
