February 17, 2004 I talked with Fair Leta Yawn today -- M.B.'s widow. Hopefully she will be sending information that will be added to M.B. Yawn's page. Fair Leta said that while in China, Stanley Hill of Austin, Texas, was one of M.B.'s good friends. Unfortunately, Fair Leta passted away February 25, 2015. Fortunately, I am now in touch with M.B.'s son, GaryYawn.. December 7, 2022 Dear Tom Moore: Thanks for your telephone messages in regard to my dear Father, M.B. Yawn, and my dear Mother, Fair Leta Yawn. If my memory is correct, you may have spoken with my Mom around 2004. As I recall, she was so very happy to speak with you and greatly appreciated your interest in my Dad's service during World War II. With both of my parents now deceased, I find myself more interested than ever in their participation in the "greatest generation" and I continue to find unexpected news clippings and other memorabilia pertaining to that time. I think Mom may have sent some information on to you, but I will search through all the archival records now in my possession and I will be happy to share any that may be of interest. I know there are clippings and photos, as well as other records and souvenirs. I greatly enjoyed discovering your website, www.cnac.org, and I look forward to learning more. Please let me know if I may be of any assistance. With best wishes and thanks for your dedication to preserving history. Very sincerely yours, Gary Yawn POB 411 Alvarado, TX 76009-0411 February 28, 2023 Dear Tom Moore: Apologies for the delay, but I have located a few items I thought you might be interested in seeing. My Dad's birthday is coming up tomorrow, March 1, and Mom and Dad's Anniversary is March 2, so I'm glad to get this to you before the "big" days. I'm attaching a photo and press release from the military highlighting Dad receiving the Air Medal from General Cheves in Kunming along with a tinted color photograph of Dad in a China-India-Burma jacket. I'm uncertain if this was Dad's jacket or just one they had on hand for the photos. There is also a photo Dad's two Air Medals, his Distinguished Flying Cross, and other decorations. I know there is a lot more info tucked away in boxes that I need to sort through and I will send it along as I find it. As they used to write in the Reader's Digest, my Dad was my "most unforgettable character" and I'm happy to share his story. Like most members of their generation, Mom and Dad lived extraordinary lives of sacrfice and seldom talked about it. We should all do our best to remember their stories. Gary Yawn 3-23-2023 And here's more... Dear Tom Moore: Thanks for your message and your dedicated work on Dad's page. I'm so proud to see him included! I'm attaching a group photo and the note from Dad to Mom on the reverse of the photo. Dad is pictured at the bottom and his buddy Stan Hill is on the right with the "check" mark. 5 names of the 6 pictured are stamped on the reverse of the photo, including: Blackie, Hansen, Polock, Wilson, Hill, and Yawn. Best, Gary Yawn Top - Left to right Blackie, Hansen, Polock., Wilson, Hill, Yawn. Thanks! |
