March 21, 2017 Dear Tom, My name is Dikwai (David) Fan. While cleaned up my grandfather's stuffs in Hong Kong last year, I found some photos, certifications and his CNAC employee ID (attached). My grandfather (K.C. Fan) was stationed at the Kunming air base in China. When I was a kid, my grandfather told me some stories of his service years at Kunming. I don't remember the stories clearly now. He was majored in engineer at college, trained as aircraft mechanic at Far East Flying Training School (attached) and then worked as airplane mechanic at the Kunming air base. Anyway, if you are interested, I'll send you more info I found. My grandfather was my best friend. I hope the info I found help the CNAC website. Best regards, David Fan San Diego, CA David - My pleasure to hear from you and my appologies for responding so late. I look forward to hearing more from you about your "best friend". Take care, Tom August 14, 2022 Hi Tom, How are you doing? My uncle was cleaning up and found another CNAC doc from my grandpa (K.C. Fan). Looks like a discharge letter from CNAC. It showed my grandpa served at CNAC from 1/31/1943 to 12/25/1945. The person who signed the letter (Mr. Loy H. Locke) is listed on CNAC.org too. Cheers, David May 4, 2017 From CNAC Captain Peter Goutiere Hello Tom; also to David Fan, It is difficult for this old "Rascal" to go back some seventy plus years and recite the facts?? All I can recall, is that there was a very good mechanic that serviced our planes for their return flights to Dinjan. The planes would be checked especially if the pilot said there was something wrong. Mainly though, all our flights to KMG were not only serviced; Each plane had to have fifty (50) gallons of our fuel drained from the left, rear tank. This was extra fuel for Gen. Chenault's P-40s!! Our chief mechanic (Fan?) would handle this operation. If there was an "air raid" coming, the mechanic would see that the planes were taken care of. On one such raid (Jing-Baw), one of our pilots remained in his plane (Capt. Privensal). The Jap bomber struck KMG and hit (Pri'S) plane. He was killed. Different story? We had a black Bear named "Elmer". Elmer ended up in KMG. I belive our chief mechanic took care of Elmer. In time Elmer died and we would all wind up eatig "Sweet and sour" Elmer!!!! I thnk that was also arranged by our Mechanic?!! Best I can do for Tom and David. Take Care, Pete building a mountain... the display... The artist, Leanne Fan or would like to be added to the CNAC e-mail distribution list, please let the CNAC Web Editor, Tom Moore, know. Thanks! |
