Hello CNAC Web Editor,

My name is Franklin Chiang. I was a CNAC pilot from 1942 to 1945. I was based out of Kunming. Julius Petach was a friend of mine and stayed at my home in Chengdu once. He was a handsome guy, you might say, a lady's man.

I came to the United States in 1945 to attend MIT. Later, I attended Stanford University.

Please add my name to the web site. Let me know if I you'd like more information.

Best regards,

Franklin Chiang
Mountain View, CA

P.S. I am copying my daughter (carina_chiang@yahoo.com) on this email, so she can notify me in case you'd like to get in touch.

Hello Tom,
Thank you for getting in touch regarding my father Franklin Chiang. His days flying with CNAC were a very special time for him.

This photo likely dates from the early 1950's, when he was at MIT and then at Stanford University. I have a photo taken when he got his CNAC wings that I'll be able to scan and send you in a couple of weeks.

I also have photos he took while he was in China and Calcutta during WWII. Any suggestions on archives that might be interested in access to these images?

Early 1950s

My father passed away peacefully in 2016 on Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) on Monday February 8.

Super Bowl 50 was on Sunday February 7 2016 at nearby Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California, so the Blue Angels (a favorite of Dad's from his days of flying for CNAC) flew directly over the house on Saturday February 6 (for a test run) and on Sunday February 7.

On Lunar New Year (Monday February 8, 2016), we thanked Dad for celebrating his birthday with us in November (when he had called out "wait - I want to sing, too" and then mustered enough strength to sing along in the Happy Birthday song), we told him about his beloved Blue Angels flying overhead, and we thanked him for seeing us into the Lunar New Year. We told him we loved him and thanked him for the memories.

He passed away peacefully on Lunar New Year. Because of that particular date, we kept announcements to the bare minimum, and did not post an obituary because of concerns about the inauspiciousness of sharing news of his death to kick off the Lunar New Year.

Thank you for getting in touch.

Best regards,
Carina Chiang
